Bugün öğrendim ki: Pelorus Jack, genellikle 24 yıldır (1888-1912) Yeni Zelanda'nın Cook Strait kentindeki Admiralty Körfezi'nde görülen bir su şeridinde gemileri karşılaması ve onlara eşlik etmesiyle ünlü bir yunustu. Pelorus Jack, geçen bir gemiden vurulduktan sonra, 1904'te kanunla korunan ilk deniz hayvanı oldu.

Pelorus Jack was usually spotted in [Admiralty Bay](/wiki/Admiralty_Bay,_New_Zealand "Admiralty Bay, New Zealand") between Cape Francis and Collinet Point, near [French Pass](/wiki/French_Pass "French Pass"), a notoriously dangerous channel used by ships traveling between [Wellington](/wiki/Wellington "Wellington") and [Nelson](/wiki/Nelson,_New_Zealand "Nelson, New Zealand").[1][2] How he got his name is uncertain. It is recorded in the book _Breverton's nautical curiosities : a book of the sea_ that he was named after the [pelorus](/wiki/Pelorus_\(instrument\) "Pelorus \(instrument\)"), a marine navigational instrument.[ 3] However, _Te Search - the Encyclopedia of New Zealand_ , says the name came from [Pelorus Sound](/wiki/Pelorus_Sound "Pelorus Sound") because it was at the entrance to that stretch of water where he would regularly meet ships to accompany them .[4] Pelorus Jack was shot at from a passing ship, and was later protected by a 1904 New Zealand law.[5]
