Bugün öğrendim ki: Belçikalı bir işadamı, Manhattan Projesi'nin başarısında etkili oldu. Uranyumun önemini fark ederek 1.200 tonunu Staten Island'a gönderdi. Yarbay Nichols onunla temasa geçtiğinde, basitçe şöyle cevap verdi: "Cevheri şimdi alabilirsiniz. New York'ta. Ziyaretinizi bekliyordum."

Belgian mining director **Edgar Edouard Bernard Sengier** (9 October 1879 – 26 July 1963) was a Belgian [mining engineer](/wiki/Mining_engineer "Mining engineer") and director of the [Union Minière du Haut Katanga](/ wiki/Union_Minière_du_Haut_Katanga "Union Minière du Haut Katanga") mining company that operated in [Belgian Congo](/wiki/Belgian_Congo "Belgian Congo") during [World War II](/wiki/World_War_II "World War II"). Sengier is credited with giving the American government access to much of the [uranium](/wiki/Uranium "Uranium") necessary for the [Manhattan Project](/wiki/Manhattan_Project "Manhattan Project"), much of which was already stored in a [Staten Island](/wiki/Staten_Island "Staten Island") warehouse due to his foresight to stockpile the ore to prevent it from falling into a possible enemy's hands. For his actions he became the first non-American civilian to be awarded the [Medal for Merit](/wiki/Medal_for_Merit "Medal for Merit") by the United States government.
