Simple, bladeless radial steam turbine "Hero engine" redirects here. For the game engine and server technology platform, see [HeroEngine](/wiki/HeroEngine "HeroEngine") . [](/wiki/File:Aeolipile_illustration.png) An illustration of Hero's aeolipile An **aeolipile** , **aeolipyle** , or **eolipyle** , also known as a **Hero's engine** , is a simple, bladeless [radial steam turbine](/wiki/Radial_turbine "Radial turbine") which spins when the central water container is heated. [Torque](/wiki/Torque "Torque") is produced by steam jets exiting the turbine. The [Greek-Egyptian](/wiki/Greeks_in_Egypt "Greeks in Egypt") [mathematician](/wiki/Mathematician "Mathematician") and [engineer](/wiki/Engineer "Engineer") [Hero of Alexandria](/wiki /Hero_of_Alexandria "Hero of Alexandria") described the device in the 1st century AD, and many sources give him the credit for its invention.[1][2] However, [Vitruvius](/wiki/Vitruvius "Vitruvius") was the first to describe this appliance in his _De architectura_.[3] The aeolipile is popularly thought to be the first recorded [steam engine](/wiki/Steam_engine "Steam engine") or reaction [steam turbine](/wiki/Steam_turbine "Steam turbine"),[4] but in fact, was not a true version or predecessor to the steam engine as invented during the [Industrial Revolution](/wiki/Industrial_Revolution "Industrial Revolution").[5] The name – derived from the [Greek](/wiki/Ancient_Greek "Ancient Greek") word Αἴολος and [Latin](/wiki/Latin "Latin") word _pila_ – translates to "the ball of [Aeolus](/wiki/ Aeolus "Aeolus")", Aeolus being the [Greek god](/wiki/Greek_mythology "Greek mythology") of the air and wind.
