Third King of the Belgians King of the Belgians **Albert I** (8 April 1875 – 17 February 1934) reigned as [King of the Belgians](/wiki/King_of_the_Belgians "King of the Belgians") from 1909 to 1934. He ruled during an eventful period in the [history of Belgium](/wiki/History_of_Belgium "History of Belgium"), which included the period of [World War I](/wiki/Belgium_in_World_War_I "Belgium in World War I") (1914– 1918), when 90 percent of [Belgium](/wiki/Belgium "Belgium") was overrun, occupied, and ruled by the [German Empire](/wiki/German_Empire "German Empire"). Other crucial issues included the adoption of the [Treaty of Versailles](/wiki/Treaty_of_Versailles "Treaty of Versailles") in June 1919, the ruling of the [Belgian Congo](/wiki/Belgian_Congo "Belgian Congo") as an overseas possession of the [Kingdom of Belgium](/wiki/Kingdom_of_Belgium "Kingdom of Belgium") along with the [League of Nations](/wiki/League_of_Nations "League of Nations") [mandate](/wiki/Mandated_territory "Mandated territory") of [Rwanda- Urundi](/wiki/Rwanda-Urundi "Rwanda-Urundi"), the reconstruction of Belgium following the war, and the first five years of the [Great Depression](/wiki/Great_Depression "Great Depression") ( 1929–1934). King Albert died in a mountaineering accident in eastern Belgium in 1934, at the age of 58, and he was succeeded by his son [Leopold III](/wiki/Leopold_III_of_Belgium "Leopold III of Belgium") (r. 1934–1951). He is popularly referred to as the "Knight King" ( _roi-chevalier_ or _koning-ridder_ ) or "Soldier King" ( _roi-soldat_ or _koning-soldaat_ ) in Belgium in reference to his role during World War I.
