**Phosphogypsum** is the [calcium sulfate](/wiki/Calcium_sulfate "Calcium sulfate") hydrate formed as a [by-product](/wiki/By-product "By-product") of the production of [fertilizer] (/wiki/Fertilizer "Fertilizer") from [phosphate rock](/wiki/Phosphate_rock "Phosphate rock"). It is mainly composed of [gypsum](/wiki/Gypsum "Gypsum") (CaSO4·2H2O). Although gypsum is a widely used material in the [construction industry](/wiki/Construction_industry "Construction industry"), phosphogypsum is usually not used, but is stored indefinitely because of its weak [radioactivity](/wiki/Radioactivity "Radioactivity") caused by the presence of naturally occurring [uranium](/wiki/Uranium "Uranium") and [thorium](/wiki/Thorium "Thorium"), and their daughter isotopes [radium](/wiki/Radium "Radium"), [radon](/wiki/Radon "Radon") and [polonium](/wiki/Polonium "Polonium"). The long-range storage of phosphogypsum is controversial.[1] About five tons of phosphogypsum are generated per ton of phosphoric acid production. Annually, the estimated generation of phosphogypsum worldwide is 100 to 280 Mt.[2] [![](//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/3/3e/Sfaz_ISS_satfoto_2015.jpg/220px- Sfaz_ISS_satfoto_2015.jpg)](/wiki/File:Sfaz_ISS_satfoto_2015.jpg) A 2015 astronaut photo of the [Medina of Sfax](/wiki/Medina_of_Sfax "Medina of Sfax") with part of the port and the distinctive circular earth works of the 420 ha [Taparura](/wiki/Taparura "Taparura") redevelopment project of which 260 ha have been [reclaimed](/wiki/Reclaimed_land "Reclaimed land") from the sea by depositing phosphogypsum.
