Union Army sergeant who shot John Wilkes Booth **Thomas H.** " **Boston** " **Corbett** (January 29, 1832 – [presumed dead](/wiki/Declared_death_in_absentia "Declared death in absentia") c . September 1, 1894) was a [Union Army](/wiki/Union_\(American_Civil_War\) "Union \(American Civil War\)") soldier who shot and killed President [Abraham Lincoln](/wiki/Abraham_Lincoln "Abraham Lincoln")'s [assassin](/wiki/Assassination_of_Abraham_Lincoln "Assassination of Abraham Lincoln"), [John Wilkes Booth](/wiki/John_Wilkes_Booth "John Wilkes Booth"). Corbett was initially arrested for disobeying orders, but was later released on the orders of Secretary of War [Edwin Stanton](/wiki/Edwin_Stanton "Edwin Stanton"), who referred to Corbett as "the patriot" upon dismissing him. He was largely considered a hero by the media and the public. Known for his devout religious beliefs and eccentric behavior, Corbett drifted around the United States before disappearing _circa_ 1888\.
